SONET/SDH system designers depend heavily on off-the-shelf ASICs and ASSPs. The total cost of ownership; royalty, integration, and support is exorbitant! In addition, over designed ASIC/ASSPs, supporting a plethora of interfaces, rates, and functionality; have high gate-count, area, and power requirements. Also with the recent economy down turn, many ASIC/ASSP vendors are forced to eliminate or refocus their engineering resources required to support and/or enhance these devices, leaving SONET/SDH system designers with the daunting task of supporting "end-of-life" components critical to their systems.
